About

"My full name is Wilhelmina Lusanna van Royen, but you can call me Willa if that’s easier. I’m a student at Pacific University, attempting to double major in integrated media and creative writing. Career aspirations? Make money, survive, be badass, etc. People make fun of me for being “hipster,” but it’s just because I’m from California, and everyone in Cali is a little bit hipster just because it’s California.

I love writing and would love to publish a book, or even some short stories. I read a lot, enough that I don’t really enjoy video games as much as most of my generation does. I love horseback riding as much as I love books, but it’s expensive and I don’t get to do it very often. When I’m not reading, or when I can’t read a book because I don’t have space to carry one around, I’ll read online stories on my phone. Thank goodness for that thing. I would be immeasurably bored without it."

From this site that I made recently. It has some examples of my photography and writing.

  • Supernatural is my guilty pleasure T.V. show.
  • Poe is my favorite poet.
  • Stephen King used to be my favorite author, but I've since expanded my horizons. Neil Gaiman ranks in the top 5 of my favorite all time authors.
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas is my favorite movie.
  • I wish I had more time to read my new books I got over the summer.
  • Housing found my hamster during the fire drill and I had to sell her :'(
  • I have a beta fish named Porthos. He's a pervert and gets excited whenever I get dressed.
  • My family all live in California, with the exception of two aunts. One lives in Australia, the other in the Democratic Republic of Congo (her husband's job took her there). At my house, we have four guinea pigs, two of which we've hand raised from babies. Penelope, the bigger one, broke her leg when she was three weeks old, but it healed okay-ish and she doesn't have trouble getting around.
  • I didn't get my driver's license until I was 18. I bought my car from my aunt but still need to pay her for the rest of it. It's a '98 Corolla. Not glamorous, but it runs super well and gets me from A to B reliably.

In this class, I hope to become better at digital image processing and manipulation, as well as digital image production and DSLR use. I know how to use Photoshop pretty well; I've been using it for six years or so (CS3). I do not, however, know how to use Bridge so that will be a learning experience.

I also greatly enjoy photography, and look forward to the opportunity to hone that particular skill. I don't have my own DSLR and will be borrowing my boyfriend's, so that will be interesting as well since I haven't used a Rebel in a few years and he has a higher-end model.

I don't know how successful Will Merzlak is, but I really love his work. I love the composition and subject of his photography and would love to be half as good as he is. His full site is here. I believe he is still semi-professional, but if he ever publishes a photobook I'll definitely buy it.

I admire his work so much because I feel almost every picture of his tells a story, such as this onethis one and this one. I have even been inspired by a few. Some of his landscape shots have become my desktop background images, because I find them soothing to look at for long periods of time, or to refocus my concentration.

  1. Awesome post Willa, I feel like I know you much better. I am glad to see that you are interested in improving your photography skills as well as learn photoshop in a better capacity. It is good that you have previous knowledge and success with this program, because what my purpose for this class is to add the why onto the how of the Adobe imaging programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. So in terms of WIll Merziak what is a single aspect of his photography that you can see that will make you better at your photography?

  2. I think mostly his image composition; when I look at his work I am reminded that there are many different ways to set up a photo
